With propagation notes

Tagasaste or tree Lucerne is a perennial forage shrub or small tree that grows well in mild, temperate climates.
It can provide good feed for farm livestock maintenance and for wool growth and provides shelter from wind & sun.
It also supplies good firewood where that is needed.

Shelter

Besides all the uses listed below they make a great shelter belt for the stock. I turn my stock onto them twice a year.

Fodder

Annual yields of up to 10 tonnes per hectare of edible leaf and fine stem are achievable. My cows, sheep, chooks & goats love it.

Landscaping

Tagasaste is an attractive evergreen tree with its often gracefully drooping habit and masses of white flowers. It could well be used as a feature tree in landscape designs.

Timber & firewood.

Tagasaste trees do not grow in a form suitable for milling but the timber is fairly dense and suitable for manufacturing small ornaments. It can also be used for firewood.

Propagation

Sow seeds in small containers about 6 to 10 weeks before the intended transplanting time, if seedlings of 10 to 15 cm height are required.

By pinching vigorously growing seedlings back to about 10 cm and restricting watering, plants can be held satisfactorily until conditions are suitable for transplanting.

For plants in larger containers it is important that the plants are not allowed to become root bound.

Establishment is better for small seedlings (about 15 cm tall) than for larger plants.

Plants can be safely grazed or trimmed at a year after sowing or when 25 cm high, to encourage a multi-stemmed plant to develop that tolerates grazing.
